Specialists

Both psychologists and psychiatrists can help you when you are suffering from depression. They have different professional backgrounds and expertise.

Psychologists will have graduated in applied psychology from a university. The psychologist will then have undergone two years' practical training and supervision and will then become an authorised psychologist.

Many psychologists decide to become clinical psychologists. Clinical psychologists are trained in normal psychological principles and also have a thorough knowledge of mental disorders and their treatment. It is the normal which takes up the most time in therapy.

The psychologist may then specialise in psychotherapy and supervision, which takes at least five years.

A psychiatrist is a doctor who has completed specialist training in treating mental disorders. Some psychiatrists also become specialists in psychotherapy. This requires special training in psychotherapeutic treatment. This covers both theoretical knowledge and practical training in the chosen psychotherapeutic methods.
